While it is unlikely that technology will completely replace doctors, it is highly likely that doctors who do not embrace technology will be replaced by those who do.
Zubin introduced a remote-presence robotic system into orthopaedic post-operative care and ran the country's first tele ward rounds with it. The pilot, published in the Journal of Robotic Surgery, measured what mattered most: whether patients and nursing staff actually accepted a robot at the bedside. They did.
One of the earliest Google Glass Explorers in the world, Rafael wore the device through a live operation and recorded it from the surgeon's own point of view. It was the moment wearable computing entered the operating theatre, and it reframed what intra-operative consultation, mentoring and education could look like.
From The Royal London Hospital, Shafi broadcast a cancer operation live from his own point of view. Around 13,000 students and clinicians in 115 countries watched, typed questions as they went, and had them appear on the glass in front of him mid-procedure.
Shot with two 360-degree cameras in the operating theatre, the operation was streamed live in virtual reality so that anyone with a headset or a smartphone could scrub in from anywhere on earth. Surgical education stopped being limited by how many people could physically fit around a table.
When the pandemic reached Singapore's foreign worker dormitories, Zubin worked pro bono with the Ministry of Health on the conceptualisation, build and use of the Telemedicine Allocation and Reconciliation System. It went on to become the default platform used nationally for Singapore's foreign worker population. He calls it his proudest contribution.
At the Digital Surgery Summit in Singapore, all three took the same stage to reimagine connected surgery from three continents' worth of practice. HiruX had become one collective rather than three calendars.
